In the days after the finale of Breaking Bad aired, Salon called me "one of the only writers to continue conspiracy theories and say that Walter White was not dead." It's true that I took a pretty unequivocal position on the matter. I didn't see conclusive evidence medically, and it didn't make financial sense for the franchise. My job is to be skeptical. I feel like Vince Gilligan is constantly misdirecting me, on screen and in my personal life, even though we've never met. But this now-going-viral video of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul reading the script for the first time is a bit incontrovertible.
Indeed, there is a point in the script where it literally says that Walt lies "lifeless."
So I was wrong.
Or, was I? What is lifelessness? When, in his depravity, did Walt cease to be alive?
Five seasons and a movie.
