Are you experiencing vague pains? Emotional disturbances? "Hot flushes"? According to this 1953 instructional film for doctors presented by the Schering Corporation, you may be undergoing "the menopause" – a series of physiological and psychological changes "characteristic only of womankind."

The film details treatment options available for menopausal women including hormone therapy, radiation, and "mild sedation." Estrogen, the narrator explains, can be particularly effective in turning your frown upside down:
